take action for human rights
rock4rights youth activism for human rights :: united states

hi there. and welcome to our stuff for skools (sic) page. here we try to collect together stuff that will be useful for students, teachers, and anyone else really. we include study resources, teaching materials, useful links, details on 'kool for skool' books about human rights, and also stuff on what skool amnesty groups are doing.

oh, and we may add other stuff. especially if you're kind enuff to donate it!

useful resources for studying human rights

teaching resources

our thanks goes to kim brett, daniel dennis, and janet alexander for their valuable contributions :)

ABC, teaching human rights

this excellent on-line booklet from the UN high commission for human rights provides an excellent primer on approaches, both general and pedagogical, to teaching human rights in primary and secondary schools. it includes great ideas on developing individual ownership of human rights as well as exploring how these individual responses are reflected in communities and nations.

Democratic Struggles and Human Rights (word doc format)

this is a unit teaching plan that is based on year 9/10 in sunny queensland (and has curriculum links for the qld syllabus) but it is in word format so you can modify it as you see fit. the unit requires students to investigate a major historical struggle and produce a television documentary proposal on an individual who was central to that struggle (e.g. nelson mandela against apartheid).

Malcolm Fraser (former Australian Prime Minister) speaks out on refugee rights (word doc format)

former pm malcolm fraser lets fly at the current government's refugee policies and the culture they are creating. also includes some letters to the editor, written in response to the article. it's a little controversial, but given that it's written by a former liberal party prime minister about a current liberal government, it stacks up.

kool books

here's a quick list of top reads that have a human rights theme or message or just let you know more about our world and what we all have to do to make a better, more human, future!

um, the list got a bit long (yippee!) so you can view the list here and if you know of any other books that you'd like to share, then let us know!
skool groups

hey there, we want to hear from you. yes, you!

if you are a part of an amnesty skool group or you just wanna get one started, we'd love to hear from you. we want to collect together stuff like kool ideas for skool groups, contact details, and 'what we'd really like for our skool group. anyway, if you can hit us via our get involved form we can start building a list of kool skool groups and get the thing amped up.

if you want someone to visit your skool and talk at an assembly or meet with your skool group, then let us know that too! we would love to hear from you!
